Being the first operators to offer direct drilling in the 1970s, we continue to innovate and push forwards and we now operate two of the very best drills currently in production, a Vaderstadt and a Claydon, meaning we are equipped for any conditions!
Using the best universal drillOur 6 metre Vaderstad drill can drill anything, anywhere in almost any conditions. Two rows of front discs and a levelling bar create a level tilth into which the secondary seeding discs deposit the seed at even depth to be consolidated by the following rubber wheels and finally brushed over by the harrow bar. Often drilling directly into land cultivated a month earlier by our Discordon tillage train, or otherwise following a secondary cultivation with our Vaderstad carrier, it allows large acreages to be quickly and properly drilled and the staggered rear wheels performmuch better in wetter conditions than our old mark one drill with all tyres in a line.
It also ensures the seed is planted at even and sufficient depth to be safely treated with Avadex granules, for example, afterwards. The Vaderstad is particularly impressive in a dry season, consistently planting the seed into whatever moisture there may be with minimum of disturbance and moisture loss. From a few kilos of clover seed to a tonne of wheat it handles them all and with GPS on top and pre-emergence markers behind your fields will look a picture all year!

Using the best direct drill
"Probably the best Direct Drill in the world" is no idle boast for the Claydon. Perhaps more properly called a strip tillage drill, it receives widespread critical acclaim for good reason because its unique combination of rigid front tine and sprung following seeding tine really does the business. Cracking open the sternest soils with the former to create a drainage and rooting channel and easing the path for the following seeding tine which vibrates and shatters the surface, depositing seed underneath before the flow of soil falls back on top to be levelled by the paddles and following harrow tines at the rear.

This is our third Claydon drill, this time a 6 metre Hybrid, it is again a big improvement on its predecessor, having much better straw handling characteristics and folding to a legal transport width. With a 370 hp Massey 8690 at the front and GPS on top, it is a formidable piece of kit which could be helping you spread the workload and even demonstrating your own direct drill of the future.
After a decline in the use of direct drilling due to sterile broam and following the straw burning ban, both drill technology and weed control systems have dramatically improved and we are now pleased to be successfully offering the service again.
Ideal for oilseed rape, especially in a dry season (don't most things work when it's wet?) it is also brilliant for beans, perfect for peas and wicked for wheat!
